Orange concentrate is a product made from orange juice. First, the oranges are juiced, and in the next step, the juice is evaporated and concentrated using industrial equipment.

As a result, with the reduction of water in the orange juice, the concentration of nutrients and natural sugars increases, resulting in a thicker, sweeter substance known as orange concentrate.

Orange concentrate is primarily used in the food and beverage industry. Due to its reduced volume compared to regular orange juice, it is easier and more cost-effective to transport in bulk.

The orange harvesting season in Iran typically begins in early autumn and extends into early winter. Depending on the type of oranges and the climatic conditions of different regions, harvesting starts in October and continues until January.

During this period, the production and processing of orange concentrate in factories is at its peak, and due to the abundance of supply, prices for orange concentrate are usually lower. 

Therefore, the best time to purchase orange concentrate is during the harvest season, as larger volumes are available at more competitive prices.

However, orange concentrate in aseptic packaging has a shelf life of up to 2 years, meaning that Tarazfoods consistently has stock available in reasonable quantities throughout the year.

Storage and transportation conditions of bulk Orange concentrate

Orange concentrate is available in two packaging forms: aseptic and non-aseptic. For export, we typically use aseptic bags in 200-liter metal drums (265 ± 2 kg). The shelf life of orange concentrate in aseptic packaging is up to 24 months after production.

In non-aseptic conditions, the product must be stored at -18°C to prevent spoilage. However, aseptic packaging does not require refrigeration, allowing for transportation without the need for refrigerated containers.

Orange concentrate is available in two main types of packaging: aseptic and non-aseptic. The choice of packaging depends on the destination and transportation distance.

Non-aseptic packaging is typically used for short-distance shipments between cities or nearby regions. This type of packaging is more cost-effective but must be stored at very low temperatures (at least minus 18°C) to prevent spoilage. For longer distances or export to other countries, non-aseptic packaging is neither practical nor economical, as it would require refrigerated containers.

In contrast, aseptic packaging is recommended for exports and long-distance transportation. Due to advanced sterilization processes, this type of packaging preserves the product for up to 24 months at room temperature without the need for refrigeration.

The stages of orange concentrate production by Tarazfood factories are as follows:

  1. Buying oranges: Oranges are carefully collected and purchased from orchards, ensuring production starts with the best raw materials.
  2. Washing and disinfection: Oranges are washed and disinfected by industrial machines to remove all contamination and bacteria.
  3. Juicing: Oranges are squeezed using industrial juicers to obtain pure orange juice.
  4. Filtration: In this step, orange juice is filtered through advanced filtration devices and solids and excess materials are removed.
  5. Evaporation: Orange juice has its excess water removed in condenser devices (evaporators) by heat under pressure, turning into concentrate.
  6. Pasteurization: To increase shelf life, orange concentrate is heated by pasteurization devices to destroy any germs and bacteria.
  7. Quality Control: Physical and chemical tests such as Brix, pH, and acid content are conducted by well-equipped laboratories to ensure product quality.
  8. Packaging: After final approval, orange concentrate is aseptically packed in 200-liter metal barrels

What is Concentrate Brix?

Brix is a unit that measures the sugar content in liquids like juice or concentrate, indicating the sweetness and concentration of the product. In orange concentrate, Brix represents the percentage of sugars relative to the total liquid. A higher Brix means a thicker, sweeter, and more expensive product.

Brix is measured using a refractometer, which determines dissolved sugar based on changes in the refractive index. The exact Brix depends on factors like orange variety and production processes.
